What you should know about using Medium to promote your business

There are two things you need to know about publishing on Medium.com

Medium is a platform that was launched in 2012 and slowly picked up steam as a great place to post long-form content or articles. Many influencers and content producers turned to the platform as their primary point for publishing.

If you are thinking about utilizing medium as a place to publish content for your business and to raise more awareness the two factors you need to understand are the following.

  1. Medium has great SEO. The site ranks well itself and if you publish in niche sectors your content published on Medium will show up in google.
  2. Medium does not help the SEO of your own website. No matter how many links you create back to your website, and how many times they are clicked it will not increase the ranking of your own website.

So what does this mean exactly?

Taking both statements into account, there are more positives than negatives.  Medium has set up “no follow” on backlinks which means that google doesn’t track links that are clicking back to your own website. That is the simple reason why posting content with links on medium.com will not contribute to your own site’s SEO as backlinks. However, that aside there is a ton of opportunity on medium for long form content and getting brand recognition.

Medium has high domain authority which means that it ranks very well. If you are able to spend some time writing exclusive (original) articles on it, it is definitely recommended.

Just because they aren’t sending data back to google when someone clicks on your link, doesn’t mean you can’t acquire a ton of organic traffic.

Make sure you write your Medium articles with SEO in mind.

  1. Use Title Tags
  2. Never write less than 1,000 words.
  3. Include back links to all of your websites where relevant.
  4. Use contextual back links.
